Will Alexis Mac Allister leave Liverpool after this season? Reds’ manager Andoni Iraola recently broke silence about the news surrounding the Liverpool midfielder’s alleged transfer to Real Madrid.
MacAllister and Alisson to stay at Liverpool, confirms Iraola
There were rumors circulating about the departure of players like Alexis Mac Allister and Alisson Becker. Mac Allister was expected to join Real Madrid next year for a transfer deal around £85 million. However, team manager Andoni Iraola has put the rumors to rest. Both the players will remain at Anfield for another season, as reported by The Guardian.
Iraola further spoke about Mac Allister’s utility at Liverpool. He maintained that the midfielder has been one of the best players for both his club and Argentina. He further added, “I want to keep my good players.”
Mac Allister joined the Reds in 2023. He was previously part of Brighton & Hove Albion from 2019 to 2023. In between, he also played for Argentina Juniors & Boca Juniors under different loan spells.

Mac Allister’s overall contribution to Liverpool
Liverpool didn’t have a great time at the Premier League last year. However, Mac Allister did his best to make up for it. Probably that’s why Iraola wants to retain him for the 2026-27 season. He mentioned in the interview that he didn’t want to lose the good players who are still in the team. Instead he will focus on adding new players to the squad. The Reds have already signed players like Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet for the upcoming season.
Iraola wasn’t wrong about his analysis for the previous season. Star players like Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate left the Reds after the 2025-26 season. A major reason behind their exit was the alleged friction between the team players and the former manager Arne Slot. He was sacked after the 2025-26 season, when Liverpool finished fifth in the League table. That is why Iraola wants to build a stronger, cohesive unit for the upcoming season. He wants to leave nothing to chance this time.
Future gameplan for Alexis Mac Allister
Mac Allister will currently be resting for a while before preparing for the upcoming **football**season. The 27-year-old was a part of the Argentina team that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He was a part of the Argentina squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics, where they made it to the quarter-finals. Mac Allister also made it to the current squad that finished runners-up in the 2026 edition. Argentina lost to Spain in the final 1-0. Ferran Torres scored the golden goal for the Spanish team in the 106th minute. Spain won the World Cup title after 16 years.
After the World Cup, the Argentinian midfielder will work on improving his fitness. He suffered from muscular injuries last year in August. This kept him out of action for a while. However, he recovered quickly, and eventually made it to the FIFA World Cup.
Now that coach Iraola has shown faith in Mac Allister’s performance, it is time for the midfielder to return the favor. The midfielder has been a part of the Reds, when they won the 2024-25 Premier League title. He has recently proved his skills at the World Cup as well. Mac Allister knows very well that he won’t get another chance at redemption. He has to make it count this time.
