Portland Trail Blazers Assistant General Manager Sergi Oliva has left the organization, according to Mike Richman of Locked on Blazers. Oliva is now the second assistant general manager to leave the Trail Blazers this offseason, after Mike Schmitz departed in May to become the general manager of the Dallas Mavericks.
Richman broke the news about Oliva’s departure during Thursday’s episode of the Locked on Blazers podcast.
According to three sources that Locked on Blazers has spoken to, Assistant GM Sergi Oliva left the franchise. Shortly after Mike Schmitz took the job in Dallas in May, Sergi decided to leave as well.
The Blazers entered the offseason with three assistant general managers working under General Manager Joe Cronin: Schmitz, Oliva and Andrae Patterson. That trio had been working together since the 2022 offseason as part of a revamped front office following Cronin’s promotion from interim GM to the full-time position. Now, only Patterson remains in Portland.
The Blazers haven’t announced replacements for Schmitz or Oliva’s assistant GM roles.
The Blazers hired Oliva in May 2022, just a few days after news broke that the organization had hired Schmitz (Patterson was hired in January 2022). In addition to his role as assistant GM, Oliva served as the head coach of the Blazers G League affiliate, the Rip City Remix, for the 2024-25 season.
“A big part of my job in the front office anyway was looking at innovation initiatives, like trying to find new ways, hopefully better ways, to do things at all levels of basketball, whether it’s from nutrition to cap strategy to on the court,” Oliva told reporters at Remix Media Day in November 2024. “ … I felt [the Remix position] was very much in line with what I was doing already in my job, in my day-to-day, and it was kind of bringing it to the next level.”
Oliva got his NBA start with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2014 as a basketball operations analyst. He spent six seasons with the franchise, finishing his tenure as vice president of strategy. Before joining the Blazers, he spent two seasons as an assistant with the Utah Jazz under head coach Quin Snyder.
Oliva, from Gelida, Catalonia, also holds multiple degrees from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, including a PhD in Computational Complexity.
