Manchester United have pulled out of the race to sign Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott after learning the asking price, according to The Mirror.
The Red Devils have signed two midfielders in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans this summer, but they are open to pursuing another midfield signing.
Scott has been frequently mentioned as a target, but The Mirror claim there is a significant valuation difference between United and Bournemouth.
Michael Carrick’s side value Scott in the £40 million bracket as he has yet to win his maiden England cap and has not played in the Champions League either.
However, the Cherries are holding out for more than £70m for his services, which means United are prepared to look at alternatives for a third midfielder.
Scott, on the other hand, is said to favour a move to Arsenal, but he is worried about the amount of playing time under manager Mikel Arteta.
United may not spend big on a third midfield signing
Kobbie Mainoo had a stellar second half to last season with United. The Red Devils graduate was left in the wilderness by former manager Ruben Amorim, but Carrick’s arrival changed everything.
The Englishman went on to make the World Cup squad, which seemed unlikely at one stage. Mainoo did not feature for the Three Lions, but he is an undisputed midfield starter for United when fit.
Similarly, captain Bruno Fernandes is assured to continue as the number 10 next term. This leaves just one spot in midfield, which could be shared between Santos, Tielemans and the third midfield recruit.
Hence, United may not want to overspend. Scott is undoubtedly a brilliant player, and caught the eye with his forward distribution and defensive contributions from the number 6 role last season.
However, £70m+ is a huge outlay on a young midfielder who may not start regularly. Hence, United have made the right choice to move on and pursue someone who would be content with reduced minutes.
In the last few hours, Bournemouth’s Tyler Adams and Fulham’s Sander Berge have emerged as targets. One of the duo could be signed for £30-35m and could settle for a rotational starting position.
