And although the disgruntled big man is seeking a lucrative contract, the franchise is still focused on nailing the best deal possible while preserving its future contention plans.

“We very clearly want Jalen back with us for next year and beyond. If we didn’t, we could have easily done several different sign-and-trade deals,” a Pistons front office executive told Keith Smith of Spotrac. “But the numbers have to be right. You saw what’s happened with Boston and OKC and New York.
"We don’t want to have to shed talent around Cade (Cunningham) and Jalen a year or two from now.”
Pistons prioritizing long-term contending flexibility amid Jalen Duren contract standoff
After enjoying a breakout 2025-26 season for the Detroit Pistons where he clinched his first career All-Star and All-NBA nod, Jalen Duren made himself eligible to sign a five-year max deal worth a staggering $287.1 million.
However, it appears unlikely Duren gets that massive deal. As it stands, both sides have yet to advance from their "modest" progress in contract talks, wherein the star big man is still stuck in the market as a restricted free agent.
Despite engaging with the Sacramento Kings and the Los Angeles Lakers, no NBA team has yet to make a contract offer for Duren.
This offseason saw the past three NBA champions making huge decisions by committing major roster moves. The Boston Celtics stunned the entire NBA by trading Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers.
After being dethroned, the Oklahoma City Thunder offloaded several of their championship core by trading Isaiah Joe to Detroit and both Aaron Wiggins and Lu Dort to the Atlanta Hawks.
Meanwhile, after parting ways with Mitchell Robinson, the reigning champion New York Knicks are facing a dilemma about how to evade the second apron as they will maneuver the looming extension eligibility this summer of Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart.
Following their meteoric 60-win campaign last season, the Pistons are clearly looking forward to taking the next step. But in their ongoing situation with Duren, they are facing a challenging spot in maximizing their title window from a financial standpoint.
