Arsenal now offered "exceptional" Champions League defender to replace William Saliba

Arsenal have been approached to sign Sporting CP defender Zeno Debast, following an update on the severity of William Saliba's injury.

Saliba was forced off before half-time in France's World Cup semi-final against Spain, and the centre-back is now set for an 'extended period' on the sidelines, as reported by journalist Ben Jacobs, who relayed the Gunners' update: "Extensive assessments have concluded that surgery is not recommended, but William should now commence a managed recovery programme.

"William’s rehabilitation will commence immediately, with continual management of his injury, and he is expected to be out of action for an extended period."

As such, Mikel Arteta could do with signing a short-term replacement, and Debast has now emerged as an option, having become a key player for Sporting CP over the past two seasons, making 72 appearances, including 12 in the Champions League.

One of the Belgian's most impressive attributes is his passing, averaging 7.0 accurate long balls per 90 in the Liga Portugal last season, which was the highest in the entire division.

Saliba is also comfortable in possession, averaging 67.3 accurate passes in the Premier League during the 2025-26 campaign, which is 13.1 more than any other member of Arteta's squad.

Consequently, the Sporting star could be a like-for-like replacement for the Frenchman in that regard, although ex-Anderlecht boss Brian Riemer has suggested his "defensive qualities" aren't quite as impressive as his ability in possession.

Arsenal offered chance to sign Zeno Debast

According to a report from Caught Offside, Arsenal have been in contact to sign Debast, with agents informing them he could be available for around €40m (£34m) this summer.

The Gunners are open to signing the 26-cap Belgium international, as their search for a Saliba replacement continues, but they are yet to engage in formal talks.
