Germany have officially confirmed what many in football have long suspected. Jurgen Klopp is back in the dugout, and back on home soil.
The former Liverpool manager, who stepped away from Anfield in 2024 after an iconic nine-year spell, has now been appointed as the new head coach of the German national team.

It marks to return to frontline management for Klopp, who had taken on a more strategic role within the Red Bull football structure following his Liverpool exit.
Klopp’s move comes after his departure from RB Leipzig, where he had been operating in an overarching role rather than as a day-to-day manager.
The Germany job was viewed as one of the few roles capable of pulling him back. Klopp himself never hid his admiration for the German setup.
The German FA’s official statement confirms that Klopp will take charge ahead of the next international cycle, with a clear mandate to rebuild and re-energize the squad.
His first major tournament will be Euro 2026.
His agreement with Red Bull did not include a written release clause, so Klopp required permission to leave the company.
The 58-year-old will make a complete break from Red Bull following his exit. The company had initially planned for him to remain involved as an ambassador or sporting adviser, but those arrangements will no longer go ahead.
Klopp said of the appointment:
“The national team can connect us Germans like hardly anything else. That’s exactly what makes this task so special for me. I am grateful for everything I have experienced and learned in the last year and a half at Red Bull and for the openness that has made this agreement possible in the first place.”
“Now I am looking forward to this special task in German football, which we will tackle together with humility and patience: to develop a team that fights for each other, that enjoys football and behind which the people of our country can rally with full conviction.”
Meanwhile, speaking after the appointment was made official, Bernd Neuendorf, president of the German FA, said:
“We had a joint meeting this morning, it’s been 26 days since the bitter World Cup exit against Paraguay. I can inform you that there was a unanimous vote for Jürgen Klopp. We are therefore happy to introduce Jürgen Klopp as the new national coach. The assistant coaches are Peter Krawietz, Pepin Lijnders and Sven Bender”. We are convinced that Jürgen Klopp is the best solution and that’s why we’ve had some talks in recent weeks and pressed the accelerator. The personal talks with Jürgen Klopp confirmed our decision.”
DFB sporting director Rudi Völler added: “Jürgen Klopp has proven over many years at the highest level that he develops young players and that his teams perform under pressure. He is also a great motivator who will take our fans and German football with him. I am looking forward to working together.”
It was confirmed that Klopp is expected to bring former Liverpool coaches Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz with him into the Germany setup, as well as former Borussia Dortmund midfielder and defender Sven Bender.
