According to ESPN senior NBA writer Vince Goodwill, Brunson is expected to pursue a maximum extension potentially worth around $300 million after previously accepting a team-friendly deal with New York.
"Jalen Brunson is going to get all of his money. Every bit of it," Goodwill said on The Hoop Collective podcast.
"I won't say he sacrificed, but he signed a year early, right? He signed a year early. He could have signed for $100 million more by waiting.
"Every dollar of that $280 million or $300 million he is supposed to get next summer, he's going to get all of it," he added.
Brunson previously left $113M on the table
Brunson signed a four-year, $156.5 million extension with the Knicks in July 2024, one year before he could have become eligible for a five-year deal worth approximately $269 million.
By signing early, the guard left around $113 million in guaranteed money on the table and provided New York with additional financial flexibility to build a championship-caliber roster around him.
The deal began with the 2025-26 season and includes a player option in its final year.
Brunson's decision ultimately paid off from a team perspective, with the Knicks building a roster that went on to capture the 2026 NBA title.
Brunson delivers historic championship run
The 29-year-old averaged 26.0 points, 6.8 assists, and 3.3 rebounds across 74 regular-season appearances while earning another All-Star selection and a place on the All-NBA Second Team.
Brunson elevated his play further in the postseason, leading all players with 539 total playoff points as New York eliminated the Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, and Cleveland Cavaliers before defeating the San Antonio Spurs in five games in the NBA Finals.
He averaged 32.6 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.2 rebounds during the championship series and scored 45 points in the title-clinching Game 5, earning NBA Finals MVP honors.
After taking less money to help New York construct a championship roster, Brunson could now be positioned to recover much of the guaranteed salary he previously passed up.
