Liverpool should look to sell attacker Cody Gakpo if a serious offer for him comes along this summer, according to former Reds striker Emile Heskey.
The Dutchman was arguably among Liverpool’s most disappointing performers last season, during a campaign in which so many players fell below their best level.
There was plenty of frustration aimed in Gakpo’s direction, with some fans irked by the lack of spark in his game, not to mention being one-dimensional.
For now, it looks as though the 27-year-old is going nowhere, but speaking to 10bet [via Caught Offside], Heskey said Liverpool should consider moving him on this summer:
“I would consider selling Cody if a decent offer was on the table. When you’re coming in as a new manager, you have to cold-headedly look at your assets. He is an asset who holds significant market value that you could cash in on to fund your own vision.
“He has had a decent enough World Cup in terms of scoring and creating chances for Holland, which keeps his profile high. But at club level for Liverpool, it hasn’t consistently looked great for him. So yes, you’d definitely have to consider a serious offer.”
A make-or-break season for Cody Gakpo at Liverpool?
There is some sense in Heskey’s comments, considering Gakpo’s form over the past year, but given Liverpool’s lack of wide options currently, selling him would be a risk.
The Dutchman is still a force when he wants to be, combining direct running with good end product, and Arne Slot spoke highly of him in 2024, saying:
“For me, he is a regular starter. Not starting every game but he’s started on a regular basis. There is tough competition with Luis Diaz. It’s normal at a club like Liverpool to have two quality players for every position,” Slot explained, emphasising the competitive environment at the club.”
But this feels like a make-or-break season for Gakpo at Liverpool, who needs to find his best form on the left wing, with Victor Munoz and Rio Ngumoha providing stern competition in that area.
The Netherlands international may be contracted until the summer of 2030, but if he doesn’t fire under Andoni Iraola, the Reds may listen to offers next summer.
