An official announcement is anticipated later today, marking the next chapter in Mertesacker’s career after his successful spell with Arsenal.
The former Germany international has become one of the most respected figures in youth development since retiring from professional football in 2018. After hanging up his boots, Mertesacker remained at Arsenal, taking charge of the club’s academy and helping oversee the development of some of Hale End’s brightest talents.

During his time as Academy Manager, Arsenal produced several players who have gone on to establish themselves in the first team, including Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly. The club also strengthened its reputation as one of England’s leading academies under his leadership.
Mertesacker stepped down from his academy role at the end of last season after eight years at the club, with Arsenal recently appointing Pascal De Maesschalck as his successor.
His return to Germany had long been expected following his departure from north London, but the opportunity to take on such a senior role within the DFB represents one of the biggest appointments of his post-playing career.

As Managing Director for Sport, Mertesacker will play a key role in overseeing Germany’s football strategy, player development and long-term sporting direction as the national team begins preparing for the 2030 World Cup cycle.
The appointment also represents another significant milestone in a career that has already seen Mertesacker enjoy success both on and off the pitch.
As a player, he won three FA Cups with Arsenal and lifted the 2014 FIFA World Cup with Germany before becoming an influential figure behind the scenes at the Emirates.
While Arsenal supporters will undoubtedly be sad to see another club legend move on, many will also recognise Mertesacker’s contribution to the academy and the foundations he helped build for the club’s next generation.
If confirmed as expected, the move will see one of Arsenal’s most respected former figures return home to take on one of the most important roles in German football.
