The wait is finally over. LeBron James has made his decision, and the NBA can officially continue with its offseason. James is signing a two-year, $8 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Friday. The deal includes a player option for the second season, giving James control over his future beyond the 2026-27 campaign.
Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul confirmed the agreement to ESPN, ending nearly a month of speculation surrounding James’ next destination. Philadelphia emerged from a crowded group that reportedly included the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors. Now, James is heading to the Eastern Conference for the first time since he left Cleveland for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018.

James informed the Lakers in late June that he planned to play elsewhere during his 24th NBA season. What followed was one of the longest and most unusual free-agency sagas of his career. The 41-year-old took his time evaluating his options, even as the rest of the league waited for an answer.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently acknowledged that James’ decision was affecting the construction of the 2026-27 schedule. The league needed to know where its biggest attraction would play before finalizing its opening-week and Christmas Day matchups.
“We have to finish up the schedule and where LeBron plays affects the schedule,” Silver said. “It will influence how we set the schedule, opening week, Christmas. So I need him to make a decision.”
Silver finally has his answer.
James’ move gives the NBA an obvious collection of marquee games. His return to Los Angeles, potential reunions in Cleveland and Miami and first games against the defending champion New York Knicks should all receive serious consideration for national television.

LeBron joins loaded 76ers roster
Philadelphia now has one of the most star-studded rosters in the league. James joins a core featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown, whom the 76ers acquired earlier in the offseason. Philadelphia also has young guard VJ Edgecombe and recently added Anfernee Simons to strengthen its backcourt.
The biggest question will be health.
Embiid has struggled to stay on the floor consistently, while James is entering his age-42 season after playing 60 games during the 2025-26 campaign. When available, however, Philadelphia’s combination of size, scoring and experience will make it one of the most fascinating teams in the Eastern Conference.
James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds in his final season with the Lakers. Those numbers represented a decline by his historic standards, but he remained one of the NBA’s most productive playmakers. The contract is almost as stunning as the destination. James accepting only $8 million over two seasons allowed Philadelphia to add him without dismantling its roster or requiring a complicated sign-and-trade agreement.
It is a championship bet from a player who has already earned more than half a billion dollars in NBA salary. James has won four championships across stops with Cleveland, Miami and Los Angeles. Philadelphia will now give him another opportunity to chase No. 5 while playing alongside one of the league’s most talented collections of stars.
After weeks of rumors, clues and false alarms, the NBA’s biggest offseason question has finally been answered.
