According to ESPN's Anthony Slater, Golden State had not felt like a legitimate contender for James for several weeks and ultimately was not seriously involved in the final stage of his decision.
The Warriors' attention is now expected to shift toward re-signing Draymond Green and filling the three remaining places on their roster with limited financial flexibility.
Warriors were not truly in the final race
Golden State was repeatedly mentioned as a possible destination for James, with the prospect of pairing him with Stephen Curry and Green generating considerable attention.
Internally, however, the Warriors reportedly had not believed they were genuinely in contention for weeks.
James' move to Philadelphia therefore confirmed an outcome Golden State had already begun to anticipate.
The Warriors had created additional financial flexibility when Green declined his $27.6 million player option, a move that allowed the franchise to explore ambitious additions such as James.
Draymond Green personally recruited LeBron
Although Golden State ultimately fell short, Green made a personal effort to convince James to join the Warriors.
After spending time with James during a golf trip, Green confirmed that he used the opportunity to deliver what he described as a serious recruiting pitch.
"I'd be remiss if I didn't take the opportunity to throw my pitch in there," Green said. "Of course I did that, and of course the pitch was crazy."
Green had also publicly outlined how he would adjust his role alongside James and Curry, joking that he would become a corner shooter similar to PJ Tucker while allowing James to control the offense.
Stephen Curry also pushed for LeBron partnership
Curry was similarly open about wanting to play alongside his longtime rival and Team USA teammate.
The Warriors superstar confirmed that he had spoken with James during the free-agency process while stressing that the four-time MVP deserved time and space to make his decision.
"I would love to play with him, and hopefully that will be a reality soon," Curry said before LeBron ultimately selected Philadelphia.

Green reunion remains expected
With James off the market, Golden State's most immediate priority is expected to be finalizing a reunion with Green.
The four-time NBA champion became an unrestricted free agent after declining his option, but his departure was widely viewed as a move designed to create flexibility rather than a clear indication that he wanted to leave the franchise.
Bringing Green back would preserve the partnership he has formed with Curry throughout the Warriors' championship era while restoring the team's defensive leader and primary frontcourt playmaker.

Golden State must also complete the remainder of its roster, with Slater reporting that three places remain available.
