Real Madrid ‘working on deal to sign’ Man City star and why it could benefit Manchester United in long-standing…

Real Madrid are reportedly “working on a deal” to sign FIFA World Cup winner Rodri from Premier League giants Manchester City.

According to The Athletic, LaLiga powerhouse Madrid and City are yet to hold talks but Jose Mourinho’s side are now operating on the basis of the midfielder joining this off-season.

Rodri claimed the Golden Ball after helping Spain conquer defending champions Argentina in the World Cup final – ending La Roja’s 16-year drought, and City still hope the national team captain will remain in Manchester with or without a new contract.

It comes as Rodri’s contract expires in 12 months time.

The 30-year-old joined City from Atletico Madrid in 2019, and he has gone on to win four Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, Community Shield, three EFL Cups and two FA Cups.

New City boss Enzo Maresca, who has replaced Pep Guardiola, told reporters at his first press conference: “Around big players, there is always speculation. I am not worried about that; it is normal. They won the World Cup and he was the best player.

“Every manager would want Rodri because he is a top player.”

Rodri’s potential move to Mourinho’s Real Madrid could have a significant impact on City’s rivals and neighbours Manchester United.

United have reportedly Los Blancos and France international midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni their top target, having already recruited Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Tchouameni had agreed a new Madrid contract until 2031.

However, there has been no official announcement and there is speculation the 26-year-old could be sacrificed to fund Madrid’s move for Rodri.

Tchouameni, who played a key role in France’s run to the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals, could be available for around $129million AUD.
