LeBron James‘ decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers came after weeks of speculation across the NBA. ESPN insider Brian Windhorst said several important relationships ultimately separated Philadelphia from every other contender.
James officially signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the 76ers. The deal includes a player option and positions Philadelphia as a serious championship contender.
Speaking on “First Take,” Windhorst revealed that James stayed engaged with Philadelphia throughout the process. Those conversations gave the organization confidence despite uncertainty.
“LeBron kept having conversations with some of Philly’s players,” Windhorst said. “Joel Embiid obviously was a key conversation, and I don’t think Philly really loved their positioning in the running a few days ago.”

Windhorst added that Philadelphia’s trade for Jaylen Brown strengthened its pitch. However, he stressed that James’ direct contact with players kept hope alive.
“They had made their pitch,” Windhorst said. “Their big pitch was trading for Jaylen Brown, but LeBron kept reaching out to the 76ers players, and it gave them hope that they were still involved.”

Windhorst said winning remained James’ biggest priority. He said, “I don’t think anybody had any insight as to where LeBron was going. … But this is a decision, as Shams [Charania] was saying, that I think is really based in winning the 2027 NBA championship.”
He acknowledged other strong options existed. “I think you could make a case for Cleveland. You could make a case for Miami. But the 76ers had two enormous things going for them in this situation.”
The insider identified Tyrese Maxey as a decisive factor alongside the 76ers being a contender. Maxey is represented by Klutch Sports, the agency closely connected to James.
“They had Tyrese Maxey, a Klutch client who’s a star player,” Windhorst said. “I can’t say that enough. LeBron’s comfort level and connection with Tyrese Maxey, going back to when he was in college to when he joined, that is a factor here. Cleveland did not have that. Miami did not have that.”

Windhorst also explained why other destinations like the Golden State Warriors fell short. “Draymond Green was recruiting him to Golden State,” he said. “The Warriors wouldn’t have been that sort of instant championship contender.”
He added that organizational trust also mattered. “LeBron trusted the management,” Windhorst said. “There’s immense respect there. … I think all of those things gave Philly a chance.”
James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds in 60 games last season. He accepted a reduced salary to help Philadelphia build a stronger championship roster.
This move reflects James’ long-standing approach to free agency. Talent, relationships and championship potential consistently outweigh market size or personal comfort.

Philadelphia enters the season carrying enormous expectations. If James, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown stay healthy, the 76ers should rank among the Eastern Conference favorites and legitimate NBA title contenders.
