Reports floating around from talkSPORT, Fichajes and TEAMtalk suggest Mikel Arteta’s team have floated an ambitious proposal. They are considering offering Viktor Gyokeres to Atletico Madrid as a sweetener, alongside an extra €50 million (roughly £43 million) in cold hard cash. Alvarez himself has dropped the diplomatic act. He wants out of Madrid. He practically admitted as much to reporters right after Argentina saw off Austria on the international stage.
Look at his numbers for the 2025/26 campaign. They make a plenty compelling case. Down in La Liga, Alvarez logged 29 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side, bagging eight goals and laying on four assists. Champions League nights were where he really cooked, though. He smashed in 10 goals and added another four assists in Europe, finishing as Atleti’s joint top scorer with 20 goals across all competitions.
Stats aside, it is about how he plays. Ferocious pressing. Seamless positional shifts. Plus, he has that Premier League muscle memory after lifting two league titles with Manchester City before his £81.8 million switch to Spain in 2024. Very few forward options on the market bring that sort of package to the table.
The Gyokeres wrinkle in the works
It is a bit messy, though. TEAMtalk sources have poured cold water on claims that anything is signed, sealed and delivered. No formal agreement is sitting on a desk anywhere.
More to the point, both Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta are actually quite fond of Gyokeres. The Swede notched 21 goals in 55 games during his debut season in North London following that £55 million move from Sporting CP. Throwing him into a trade after twelve months feels harsh.
Then you have Barcelona sitting in the corner. Alvarez actually fancies a move to the Camp Nou. But Atletico chief Miguel Angel Gil Marin has put his foot down, telling Barca president Joan Laporta in no uncertain terms that Alvarez will not be sold to a direct Spanish rival. That stalemate gives Arsenal their window. If you tally up Gyokeres’ market value and the extra cash on offer, the total package lands somewhere around £130 million.
Trading away Gyokeres carries real danger
On paper? The footballing logic is easy enough to follow. Alvarez at 26 feels like a more complete, polished footballer than Gyokeres. His pressing, his link-up play, his instincts in tight spaces; it all feels custom-built for what Arteta demands from his central striker. Yet binning Gyokeres so quickly comes with massive risk. The man scored 21 times while still adapting to the relentless pace of English football. Cut him loose before he fully finds his feet, and you might end up regretting it big time.

If Arsenal can somehow strike a deal for Alvarez without sacrificing Gyokeres, that is the play. Letting Atletico dictate terms on a player who wants to leave anyway would be a mistake.
