A new report from a top NBA insider offers up two big reasons why LeBron James chose the Philadelphia 76ers over other interested teams in free agency. And one of them really is getting to play with young star Tyrese Maxey.
Heading into the week, the James free agent sweepstakes seemed to be down to four teams: the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and the Sixers. However, the best guess of most in and around the sport was that either a return to Cleveland or Miami was the likely result. Instead, the 22-time All-Star surprised many by picking the 76ers.
In the hours since, the big question has been why? He has no ties to Philadelphia, and the franchise has a weaker championship pedigree than the other three, since it hasn’t won a title in over 40 years. Well, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, as previously rumored, James’ connection with Maxey did indeed play a key role in his decision.
“Maxey was an unquestionable key factor in the 76ers’ landing James. Maxey had a strong relationship with James, as both are represented by Klutch Sports. With James joining a new team that has lots of egos and needs, having a connection with the point guard was an edge for Philly.”

Since James’ decision on Friday morning, there has been a lot of talk about how all the parts of the 76ers’ starting five will fit. On paper, the unit could be unbelievable. However, one consistent issue is whether the future Hall of Famer and recent Philly addition, Jaylen Brown, can build chemistry. Since their skill sets may clash more than others in the expected starting five.
Well, it seems like James wants to be on the same team with the five-time All-Star. Because, according to Windhorst, the Cavaliers not landing Brown in a trade this month played a major role in why they weren’t the top contender for him that many NBA experts thought.
“The 76ers’ acquisition of Brown absolutely made a difference for them. Before that deal, it was unreasonable to believe they’d have made James’ top five destinations, much less been his choice. If the Cavs had made that deal, which likely would’ve taken a package that included Mobley to get the Boston Celtics interested, it would’ve changed their hand.”
