Liverpool youngster Amara Nallo has completed a loan move to Finnish champions HJK Helsinki, giving the defender a chance to rebuild his confidence after a difficult start to his senior career. The 19-year-old will spend the rest of the year in Finland, where he hopes to get regular first team football.
The move comes after a challenging spell at Liverpool, where Nallo was sent off in each of his first two senior appearances. The Premier League side believe consistent game time at HJK will help the young centre-back continue his development.
HJK loan offers Nallo a fresh start
Nallo has joined HJK Helsinki on loan until the end of the Finnish season. As reported by Liverpool Echo, with the league running until late October, the Liverpool defender will be available for the final six league games and has already been named in HJK’s squad for their UEFA Conference League second qualifying round, meaning he could make his debut immediately.
As reported by The New York Times, HJK were eager to complete the deal as quickly as possible. Liverpool also believe the move will benefit Nallo by giving him regular senior football. Based in Helsinki, HJK are Finland’s most successful club, having won a record 33 league titles, making them a strong environment for the defender’s next step.
Nightmare first-team debut at Liverpool
Nallo joined Liverpool from West Ham United in 2023 and spent most of his time with the club’s Under-21 side before earning his senior opportunity. His debut, however, could hardly have gone worse.
As reported by Liverpool Echo, Nallo came off the bench against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League in January 2025 but was sent off just four minutes later. The dismissal made him the youngest player ever sent off for Liverpool. Things did not improve on his second appearance. Nallo was again introduced as a substitute during Liverpool’s Carabao Cup defeat to Crystal Palace. His outing lasted only 12 minutes before he received another red card.
His third senior appearance finally passed without incident. Nallo played the final 16 minutes against Qarabag in the Champions League and completed the match without being sent off. Despite those setbacks, the defender remained close to the first-team squad. The Reds included him in their matchday squad on nine other occasions, most recently for their Champions League defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.
Liverpool see the loan move as an important step in Nallo’s progress. As reported by The New York Times, the club left the teenager out of their pre-season tour because the loan deal was close to completion.
The Reds currently have several defensive changes within the squad. Captain Virgil van Dijk is still on holiday following the World Cup, while Giovanni Leoni continues his recovery from a torn ACL. That has left Joe Gomez and new signing Jeremy Jacquet as the senior centre-backs available during the club’s US tour.
Liverpool have also added defensive cover through other young players. This gives the club enough depth while Nallo gains valuable experience elsewhere. Although his first-team career at Liverpool began in the worst possible way, the club still believes in his long-term potential. A successful spell with HJK could help Nallo put those early setbacks behind him and return to Anfield as a more experienced and confident defender.
