After failing to hammer a reunion with LeBron James in this year's free agency, the Heat are now prioritizing their pursuit of the former NBA star, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

"Thompson remains the Heat priority, even though there’s no indication when or if he will shake free from Dallas. The Mavericks, well below the luxury tax line, have no particular financial incentive to dump Thompson — who’s owed $17.5 million in the final year of a three-year contract — unless he’s willing to take a significant pay cut on a buyout," according to the report.

"The Heat might end up needing that $8 million in exception money to bridge the gap with what he would be losing by taking a buyout with Dallas."

Miami Heat linked to Klay Thompson after failed LeBron James reunion

Klay Thompson is set to enter the final year of his three-year, $50 million contract, as he will earn $17.4 million for the upcoming 2026-27 season before he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

He averaged 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 21.7 minutes last season, shooting 38.3% of his three-point attempts across 69 games.

The Miami Heat have been linked for multiple times with Thompson already, but recent reports suggest that the franchise will only strongly pursue him once he reaches a contract buyout with the Mavericks.

Thus far, Dallas is only considering a potential trade for the future Hall of Famer rather than a buyout.

It remains to be seen how Miami will ultimately land Thompson, as they continue to build around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
