If there’s one big winner of the NBA offseason this year, it has to be the Philadelphia 76ers. In the span of a few months, they turned aging veteran Paul George and picks into Jaylen Brown and LeBron James, surging their title odds and strengthening their standing in the East.
Meanwhile, for the reigning NBA champions in New York, it’s been a relatively quiet summer. Save for the acquisition of Andre Drummond, they mostly ran it back with the core that led the franchise to its first title in 53 years. In fact, the Knicks are so satisfied with their position that they even denied LeBron James when his camp came calling to express interest.
“Sources tell Hoops Wire that James’ camp reached out to New York at one point during his free agency, but the Knicks weren’t interested in pursuing him. The reasoning was fairly straightforward,” reported Sam Amico. “New York likes what it already has.”
LeBron’s main objective in his final years is to win at the highest levels, and there’s no doubt he could have done that on a Knicks team stacked with talent. But that talent is precisely why they had no interest in pursuing LeBron. Even after recent developments, they believe they are better than their East competitors (including the 76ers), and they see no reason to change the formula now.
“The Knicks are coming off an NBA championship and remain built around Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart,” Amico added. “They saw no reason to make a major alteration to that formula, even for James. In fact, sources said the Knicks believe they remain better than the 76ers, despite Philadelphia’s headline-grabbing offseason. That’s certainly a more interesting debate now.”
Only time will tell if the Knicks will regret passing up on LeBron, but they aren’t about to risk disrupting their championship rhythm for a 41-year-old legend fading into retirement. His presence, while powerful, can also be distracting, and the Knicks have too much at stake right now to make that kind of gamble. It didn’t help that Jalen Brunson wasn’t willing to make a personal pitch to James.
Of course, things weren’t always that way. There was a time when the Knicks would have done anything to lure the King. The 2010 offseason is arguably the most famous example, with team owner James Dolan going out of his way to make a lucrative pitch. The meeting featured a video presentation that included a Sopranos intro and celebrity cameos from famous New Yorkers. Obviously, the recruitment efforts failed, and LeBron would take his talents to South Beach in a now-infamous decision that forever changed the NBA.
Much has changed for the Knicks since then, and they no longer need LeBron to be relevant. Behind the leadership of star guard Jalen Brunson (averages of 26.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 6.8 assists per game last season), the franchise has achieved greatness, and they are in a position to do it again. It would have been the best opportunity for LeBron to inflate his ring count, but he had to settle for the 76ers instead, who are sure to be in the title picture.
