Chelsea goalkeeper Max Merrick has joined Hartlepool United on a season-long loan deal.
Lee Clark believes Hartlepool United have secured the services of a goalkeeper with ‘outstanding potential’ after Chelsea youngster Max Merrick agreed to spend the 2026/27 season on loan at Victoria Park.
The England Under-20 international has already earned some senior experience during loan spells with Hanwell Town and Hampton and Richmond Borough and has been an unused substitute for Chelsea in several Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and UEFA Conference League fixtures. However, he will now look to impress during his year-long stay with Pools after he was confirmed as the club’s thirteenth new signing of the summer on Saturday morning before making his debut in a pre-season defeat against League Two club Grimsby Town just hours later.

Merrick will train with his team-mates this week as they prepare to host Fleetwood Town in their final pre-season friendly of the summer - and Clark is relishing the opportunity to help the Chelsea prospect continue his development over the coming months.
The Pools boss told the club website: “We’re delighted to welcome Max to the club. He’s a young goalkeeper with outstanding potential who’s come through one of the best academy systems in the country and we believe this is the right stage of his career to take the next step into senior football. He’s already had a taste of the men’s game during his spell at Hampton & Richmond and that experience will stand him in good stead. He’s athletic, he’s comfortable with the ball, he commands his area well and, just as importantly, he’s got a real willingness to learn.
“We believe Pools is the right environment for Max to continue his development. He’ll be working every day with Adam Smith, who has a wealth of experience both as a player and as a coach, and we’re confident he’ll benefit enormously from that while continuing to develop his own game.
