Andoni Iraola has revealed Jeremy Jacquet will be in line to play his first game for Liverpool before the end of the club’s pre-season tour of the US.

Jacquet is the only new face to have been added to the Reds’ squad so far this summer, with Victor Munoz yet to link up with his new club after signing from Osasuna, having been in the Spain squad which won the World Cup.

Despite having been in training with Liverpool even before the official start of pre-season, Jacquet was left out of the opening friendly against Sunderland on Saturday, which the Reds won 4-2 in Nashville.

The 21-year-old was forced to miss the final few months of last season after picking up a shoulder injury while back at Rennes. Having required surgery on the issue, his last game for his previous club came all the way back on February 7.

Liverpool boss Iraola is therefore being cautious with his new defender, with Jacquet also set to miss the upcoming friendly against Wrexham in midweek. He is expected to make his first appearance for the club in the final game of the tour against Leeds next weekend, before the Reds return to Merseyside to face Monaco and Como.

“With Jeremy, we decided to take it easy with him,” Iraola explained to LFCTV as he discussed the defender’s absence against Sunderland.

“He has been a lot of months without playing with a shoulder injury. So, I think we are going to take it easy with him.

“He will play probably the last game of this US tour and he will have time to have minutes. It's true that we were kind of happy but we've lost one now.”

Liverpool has indeed lost another defender, with Joe Gomez being forced off injured just 10 minutes into Saturday’s opening friendly.

Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.

The defender is set to undergo scans on the issue, with Iraola unable to give a clear diagnosis after the game, although Gomez did appear to be struggling with a muscle injury. The 29-year-old has struggled with hamstring issues previously, with this latest problem raising more concerns about Liverpool’s options in defense.

Giovanni Leoni remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from an ACL injury suffered during his debut last season, while Conor Bradley could yet be out for another few months as he looks to make his comeback from a knee injury.

Virgil van Dijk, meanwhile, is not set to join his teammates in the US as he begins training back on Merseyside alongside Cody Gakpo and Alisson Becker. Florian Wirtz, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexander Isak will be back with the Reds over the coming days though, with the former having been on hand to greet his teammates back in Chicago on Saturday.
