The player will not feature for the Reds this season despite impressing during Andoni Iraola’s first game in charge.
Liverpool supporters were given their first proper look at Ifeanyi Ndukwe during Saturday’s 4-2 pre-season victory over Sunderland in Nashville.
The teenager was thrust into the spotlight earlier than expected after Joe Gomez was forced off through injury inside the opening 10 minutes, with the 18-year-old stepping in to help the Reds begin their summer schedule with a win.

Ndukwe looked composed despite the circumstances, showing confidence on the ball and maturity in his defensive work against senior opposition.
It was an encouraging first outing for a player Liverpool have been tracking for some time, and one that offered supporters a glimpse of why the club moved quickly to secure his signature.
The Reds agreed a deal to sign the Austria Vienna defender back in January after he emerged as one of Europe’s most highly-rated young centre-backs.
Because he was still only 17, the transfer could not be completed until after his 18th birthday, meaning he officially arrived at Liverpool this summer.
Ndukwe had impressed for Austria Vienna II and also played a key role in Austria’s run to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup final, convincing Liverpool they had found another elite defensive prospect.
However, despite making a positive impression against Sunderland, Ndukwe will not be available for Liverpool in competitive matches this season.
According to The Athletic’s James Pearce, the defender does not currently meet the points threshold required to obtain a UK work permit. As a result, Liverpool intend to send him out on loan for the 2026/27 campaign while he continues his development.
The temporary move is expected to give Ndukwe regular senior football and, crucially, the opportunity to build the experience needed to satisfy the Governing Body Endorsement criteria before returning to Merseyside.
While supporters may have hoped his performance against Sunderland would accelerate his pathway into Andoni Iraola’s first-team plans, Liverpool have always viewed Ndukwe as a long-term project.
His assured display in Nashville suggested the talent is there, but for now his development will continue away from Anfield until the work permit issue is resolved.
