Liverpool’s first pre-season match was only a few minutes old when a familiar sight returned.
Joe Gomez went to ground in discomfort and appeared to require an early substitution.
If the injury is confirmed, it will once again raise the same difficult question Liverpool have been facing for several seasons:
Can the club still rely on Joe Gomez to stay fit?
A Frustrating Pattern
There is no questioning Gomez’s quality when he is available.
At his best, he is a versatile defender capable of playing at centre-back or full-back, and he has been an important part of Liverpool’s success over the years.
The problem has never been ability.
It has been availability.
Unfortunately, injuries have interrupted his career time and time again.
Every time it looks as though he is building momentum, another setback seems to arrive.
Bad Timing Yet Again
For Liverpool, this latest issue could hardly have come at a worse time.
The squad is already short of defensive depth.
Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are still working their way back to full fitness, while Andoni Iraola has already spoken publicly about the need to strengthen defensively.
Now, fewer than 10 minutes into the first pre-season game, another defender appears to have broken down.
That is a worrying sign.
Liverpool Need Reliability
Elite clubs cannot simply build a squad around quality.
They also need reliability.
Managers need to know that key players will be available across a demanding season.
Liverpool compete in multiple competitions.
The fixture list is relentless.
Constantly losing defenders to injury disrupts partnerships, tactics and squad planning.
That is why availability is often just as valuable as ability.
Time for Difficult Decisions?
It is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the reality.
Joe Gomez remains a talented footballer.
He is respected in the dressing room and has given everything for Liverpool whenever he has played.
But if injuries continue to prevent him from putting together a consistent run of games, the club may eventually have to make a difficult decision about his long-term future.
Football can be cruel.
Some players simply suffer more bad luck than others.
That does not change the fact that Liverpool need defenders they can depend upon week after week.
Iraola’s Frustration
You cannot help but feel for Andoni Iraola.
He is only beginning to work with his new squad, and already he appears to have lost another defensive option.
That only strengthens the argument that Liverpool still need reinforcements before the transfer window closes.
The manager has already admitted the squad looks thin defensively.
This latest setback will do little to change that opinion.
Fingers Crossed
At this stage, the extent of Gomez’s injury is unknown.
Liverpool supporters will hope it proves to be nothing more than a precaution.
But if it is something more serious, it will once again highlight a harsh reality.
Liverpool simply cannot plan a season assuming Joe Gomez will remain fit throughout it.
And that is why adding another reliable defender before the window closes should remain one of the club’s highest priorities.
