Arsenal defender officially signs new long-term contract

Arsenal defender officially signs new long-term contract with the club this summer ahead of the 2026/27 season

Young defenders who settle quickly after moving countries often earn early rewards for their progress. Signing a first professional contract marks an important milestone in an academy career. Regular appearances across multiple age groups help build the experience needed to take the next step.

Players who captain sides and feature in European youth competitions demonstrate leadership qualities from an early age. Opportunities to train with senior professionals provide valuable learning experiences. These moments form part of the pathway towards first-team recognition.

Callan Hamill has signed his first professional contract with Arsenal ahead of the 2026/27 season. The versatile defender joined the club from Scottish side St Johnstone at the start of last season and has quickly established himself within the academy ranks.

“I’m really delighted to get it over the line and just really looking forward to what’s coming next,” Hamill said. “I moved away from home last year and joined Arsenal last season and had a really good season last season. So, it’s been a good year so far, so looking forward to kicking on.”

The right-back wore the captain’s armband at times during his debut campaign and featured in the UEFA Youth League. In total he made 38 appearances for Arsenal’s academy sides, ranging from the FA Youth Cup to Premier League 2.

“I think I made a good impression,” he added. “Playing a lot of games. I was really happy with last season. Hopefully, I can have a good season this season.”

Hamill has also represented Scotland at under-17 level on four occasions. “It’s obviously a really proud moment playing for my country, so there’s nothing better. So, when I pull on that Scotland jersey, it does really make a difference.”

The teenager has already trained with the first-team squad and is keen for more of those opportunities. “I got a few chances to work with them, and they were really good at giving you tips and pointers on what to work on and stuff. So, taking advice from the best can only help you get better as well.

“Hopefully I can be a fully-fledged Arsenal player and play as many games as possible.”

Hamill looks up to former Gunner Granit Xhaka as a role model. The contract provides a platform for the young defender to continue his development at the club. Supporters will follow his progress with interest as he aims to push on in the coming seasons.
