Eddie Howe has admitted he does not know what the future holds for Bruno Guimaraes amid Arsenal’s pursuit of the Newcastle United captain. Speaking after a pre-season draw with Gateshead, the Magpies boss stopped short of guaranteeing that the Brazil international will remain at St James’ Park.
“I’ve had some really good conversations with him before the World Cup, during the World Cup and after the World Cup,” Howe said. “What we speak about has to remain private, but he’s just a great player, a great person.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen with Bruno’s future. That’s for other people to speculate about. They are conversations that I’m not part of.”
Howe insisted there is currently no reason to believe Guimaraes will not report back for training as planned. “There is nothing to say Bruno won’t be back training with us,” he added. “Bruno is the captain of our football club. He’s been an unbelievable player and person all through the time we have worked together.

“I speak on behalf of everyone at the football club. We absolutely love him and, of course, everyone will want him to stay.”
Newcastle remain determined to keep their skipper and do not want to sell. However, Howe’s inability to offer a firm assurance will only encourage Arsenal supporters. The Gunners are believed to have agreed personal terms and have already seen a £70million offer rejected, with improved bids expected.
Guimaraes is due to return to Newcastle on Friday before joining the squad’s training camp in Spain. Arsenal continue to push for a deal, viewing the midfielder as a priority target. The situation remains fluid and will be closely monitored in the coming days.
