He played twice in the EFL Trophy, totalling 48 minutes on the pitch. That was 25 minutes against Newport County in October and another 23 minutes against AFC Wimbledon in December. He didn’t register a single goal or assist. Zero. But output at 15 isn’t why scouts show up with notebooks. They were looking at how he moved, how he carried the ball, and how he handled space. Cardiff also named him on the bench for their EFL Cup quarter-final tie against Chelsea on 16 December 2025. He sat on the bench for 90 minutes that night, soaking in the matchday atmosphere against elite opposition.
The Welsh connection and the missed Leicester target
Born with dual eligibility for Wales and Poland, Donczew has already come through the Welsh system from Under-15 right up to Under-19 level. That gives him choices down the line, but right now, his football identity is tied to the Welsh youth setup.
He was recently pictured alongside former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who came through the same Cardiff-to-Hale-End pipeline years ago. That lineage is important in football circles. Arsenal’s recruitment team certainly knew what they were looking at.
The move comes right after Arsenal missed out on Jeremy Monga. Arsenal tracked the 17-year-old Leicester City winger for months, but they flatly refused to meet Leicester’s £10m price tag. Manchester City stepped in, paid the money, and took Monga to the Etihad. Arsenal turned their attention elsewhere, and Donczew became the target they locked onto. Whether he was a backup plan or a target running on a parallel track doesn’t really matter now. The paperwork is done.

Donczew is a long-term project. Arsenal know that better than anyone. At 16, with less than an hour of senior football under his belt, he won’t be pushing for a spot in Arteta’s squad for at least two years.
