The Philadelphia 76ers’ LeBron James acquisition is official. In order to make the signing official, the Sixers had to clear a roster spot. As expected, the veteran Dalen Terry was waived by the team.
Terry was added to the team with a two-way contract initially during the 2025-2026 NBA season. After the Sixers converted him to a standard contract, he was on the salary sheet slated to make $2.5 million for the upcoming season. However, the salary was not guaranteed, which made Terry a cut candidate after the Sixers received a commitment from LeBron.
LeBron James’ contract comes with important details
When James announced that he was going to the Sixers, many assumed he would be on a one-year deal. However, James agreed to a two-year contract. But with the deal signed, it’s been revealed that the second season will be a player option. While there was always a chance that James could only play for the Sixers for one season, due to a possible retirement looming, James could technically leave the Sixers in free agency next summer.
For now, it seems LeBron is content with finishing his career in Philadelphia. When he made he made his official statement ahead of signing with the Sixers, the star forward noted that this would be his last decision. Of course, anything can happen.
For the time being, the Sixers will have LeBron under contract for 2026-2027. According to Spotrac, he will make an estimated $3.8 million for the year. The other important contract detail is that James has a 15% trade kicker attached to his deal. Therefore, he’ll have a financial incentive for getting moved after taking the biggest pay cut in NBA history.
If James decides he wants to return to the Sixers at 42, he could make an estimated $4.0 million for the year.
The Sixers hope LeBron is the final piece
Before acquiring LeBron in free agency, the Sixers made one of the biggest blockbuster deals of the offseason. In a trade with the Boston Celtics, the Sixers swapped out Paul George for the All-NBA forward, Jaylen Brown. Coming off an MVP-caliber season, Brown instantly boosted the Sixers’ title odds.
Once LeBron James showed interest in the Sixers, many hope that he could be the final piece to the puzzle, as they look to finally end the championship drought/
