Steph Curry has made it clear that he’s disappointed that the Golden State Warriors weren’t able to land LeBron James. In fact, he’s getting tired of the team’s ‘star chasing’, trying to put a real contender around him. Marcus Thompson II writes in The Athletic that “The disappointment of missing out on yet another difference-making addition, something to get the Warriors out of the Play-In purgatory they’ve been in the last four years, had already morphed into acceptance” for Curry and the team.
Thompson adds that Curry may even be holding out on extension talks in order to force the Warriors’ hand into doing something.
He wants to win. He wants the best team the Warriors can assemble around him. He wants a chance, a real chance, for a deep playoff run. The longer it takes for him to sign a contract extension, the more you can bet Curry’s using potential free agency as a tool to keep the Warriors pushing toward that end.
Further to that, it’s rumored that several NBA executives feel that Curry should NOT sign an extension at this point, and prepare to hit free agency next summer.

Would Spurs mortgage the future trading for Steph Curry?
The mock trade would see the 38-year-old Curry head to the Western Conference champion San Antonio Spurs. In exchange, De’Aaron Fox, 2025 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, Sixth Man of the Year Keldon Johnson, and three first-round picks would go to Golden State.
The Spurs, led by superstar and Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama, went 62-20 in a huge breakthrough season, making it all the way to the NBA Finals.
The Warriors, on the other hand, continue to flounder in their efforts to surround Curry with the pieces necessary to get back to true contender status. They went 37-45 this season, just sneaking in to the Play-In as the 10th seed in the West, where they were quickly dispatched.
This proposed swap would be a massive haul for the Warriors to reset and go into the future. Fox and Castle are already stars in the league, and formed the Spurs’ dynamic starting backcourt. Johnson, meanwhile, provided an excellent 23 minutes per game off the bench (though he struggled in the playoffs). They, along with the three firsts, would not only ensure that the Warriors would stay relevent in the present, but also set them up for a bright future.
