‘A big fan’ - Sean Steur cites Man City influence in first Newcastle United interview

Newcastle United fans were given a glimpse of Sean Steur’s potential in the 1-1 draw with Gateshead.

Sean Steur has named former Manchester City ace Kevin De Bruyne as the player he aims to model his game on.

Newcastle United fans were given a first look at the 18-year-old in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Gateshead. Steur - comfortably the standout performer - earned the highest mark in The Gazette’s post-match player ratings.

A stylish display in a deep-lying playmaker role had shades of Bruno Guimaraes, the wantaway skipper angling for a move to Arsenal. While only against National League opposition, Toon supporters are already getting excited about Steur’s potential.

‘Kevin De Bruyne’ - Sean Steur

Newcastle will be hoping that Steur can replicate half the career of Premier League legend De Bruyne. The youngster was also asked about several Dutch stars who have previously represented the Magpies.

“I was a really big fan of De Bruyne,” Steur told reporters. “He is the one I watched a lot. (The Dutch players at Newcastle) were a bit before my time but, of course, Botman is a really good guy who helps me a lot. I am happy he is here and he is someone I can learn from a lot.”

Sean Steur on Eddie Howe

Steur discussed how Eddie Howe is allowing him to express his natural game - with as many minutes as possible the goal for this season. He added: "Of course I can learn a lot from him. He tries to help me as much as possible and he tells me to get on the ball and try and play my game. It is a pre-season game so it is also for fitness but I have to learn a lot and I hope we can go forward.

"I need to learn a lot. Every player wants to play as much as I can and I hope to be a part of the club's success. It's a really big club in the Premier League with a lot of history so I am really happy to be here. I need to learn but everybody wants to play.

"There is a lot of competition but I will just try to do my best and play as many minutes as I can. They have a good vision but I cannot really say (reveal) that to you. They didn't really have to convince me because if a club like that comes it is an honour."
