According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the opportunity to compete for a fifth championship alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and V.J. Edgecombe remained the primary attraction.
However, per the same report, Philadelphia's location provided an additional and meaningful advantage over the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors and Miami Heat.
New York proximity gave Philadelphia an edge
Signing with the Sixers would allow James to establish residences in both Philadelphia and New York should he choose to do so.
Philadelphia's training facility is located across the Delaware River in Camden, New Jersey, further reducing the distance between James' professional base and New York City.
The arrangement could allow James to follow a path similar to Wilt Chamberlain, who reportedly commuted from Manhattan to Philadelphia for multiple seasons during the 1960s.
According to Stein, establishing a presence in New York would also satisfy what one source described as a longstanding interest for the James family.

Knicks option was not available
LeBron has frequently expressed his admiration for Madison Square Garden, but joining the New York Knicks was not considered a realistic possibility this summer.
The Knicks had just won the NBA championship in June, and James' longtime agent Rich Paul established early in free agency that New York was not a viable destination.
Philadelphia therefore offered James the closest available alternative: the chance to compete for another championship while remaining within reach of New York.
Sixers overcame Warriors' presumed lifestyle advantage
Golden State had been viewed as possessing a significant lifestyle advantage during its recruitment of James.
A move to the Warriors could have allowed James and his wife, Savannah, to maintain their Los Angeles base after spending the previous eight years in Southern California.
Stephen Curry and Draymond Green also attempted to convince James to join Golden State, but Philadelphia ultimately presented the more appealing overall package.
