According to NBA reporter Evan Sidery, Westbrook is not generating much – if any – interest from teams, making it increasingly likely that he will begin the 2026-27 season without a contract.
After representing seven teams over the past nine seasons, the 37-year-old could be approaching the conclusion of a career widely expected to earn him a place in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Westbrook could begin season without a team
Westbrook entered free agency after spending the 2025-26 season with the Sacramento Kings, his seventh NBA franchise.
Despite his age, the former MVP remained a regular part of Sacramento's rotation. Westbrook appeared in 64 games, made 58 starts and averaged 15.2 points, 6.7 assists, 5.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 28.9 minutes per contest.
He shot 42.7% from the field and 33.8% from three-point range and had six triple-doubles.
Those numbers have not yet produced a significant market, however, and Sidery reports that an opening-night roster spot is no longer guaranteed.
Seven teams in nine seasons
Westbrook spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the Oklahoma City Thunder after being selected with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft.
He developed into one of the league's most explosive guards and helped Oklahoma City reach the 2012 NBA Finals alongside Kevin Durant and James Harden.
His long Thunder tenure ended with a trade to the Houston Rockets in 2019.
Westbrook then spent one season with the Washington Wizards before joining LeBron James and Anthony Davis on the Los Angeles Lakers in 2021.
The Lakers experiment lasted less than two full seasons, with Westbrook eventually being traded to the Utah Jazz and securing a buyout before signing with the LA Clippers.
He later represented the Denver Nuggets during the 2024-25 season before moving to Sacramento.

Former MVP owns historic resume
Westbrook's legacy is defined by one of the most statistically productive stretches ever recorded by an NBA guard.
He was named the 2016-17 NBA MVP after averaging 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists, becoming the first player since Oscar Robertson to average a triple-double across an entire season.
Westbrook finished that campaign with a then-record 42 triple-doubles and won his second NBA scoring title.
The veteran is the NBA's all-time leader with 209 regular-season triple-doubles. He also holds league records for the most triple-doubles in one season and the longest consecutive triple-double streak, recording 11 in a row.
Westbrook is a nine-time All-Star, nine-time All-NBA selection, two-time All-Star Game MVP and three-time assists champion. He was also selected to the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team and won an Olympic gold medal in 2012.
Westbrook has never won an NBA championship, but his individual achievements and historic triple-double production have already secured his place among the most accomplished guards in league history.
