Billionaire Facebook co-founder in talks to join Liverpool FC investment

Talks over a significant minority investment into Liverpool continue with Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin the latest billionaire approached to join.

Saverin launched Facebook alongside Mark Zuckerberg while enrolled at Harvard in 2004, but his stake in the company was later diluted.

He retains the title of co-founder but is no longer involved in Facebook, and later founded venture capital firm B Capital, with his net worth now estimated at $33.1 billion (£24.8bn).

According to Forbes, he is the 65th richest person in the world today – and that could lead him to join a consortium planning to invest in Liverpool.

Led by Amit Bhatia – who was director and co-owner of QPR for 18 years until he transferred his ownership this month – the proposed bid could be worth up to 30 percent.

That would value the group’s shareholding – if agreed, which is still not certain – at around £1.35 billion, with Sky News reporting talks with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, the fourth-richest person in the world.

Sky News have now reported on Bhatia’s approach to Saverin, while adding that “other parties are also understood to be involved in the deal.”

It is maintained that neither Saverin or Bezos are agreed to join the consortium at this stage, but their involvement in talks shows the scale of ambition when it comes to investment.

FSG have already confirmed negotiations over a potential partnership, which would see them hold onto their control of the club with a majority shareholding.

Saverin was previously involved in a consortium which failed to take over Chelsea in 2022, demonstrating his desire to branch out into football, and he is known to be a keen admirer of the sport.

Born in Brazil, the 44-year-old is now based in Singapore and any involvement in Liverpool is likely to come from afar rather than a hands-on role.

As it stands, FSG are not considered to be preparing for a full-blown sale of the club, and instead talks over the sale of up to 30 percent of their shares are viewed as a means to strengthen Liverpool’s position financially.

Further updates on the situation are expected in the coming weeks, though the process is understandably complex.
