Arsenal’s latest scholar intake includes Emerson Nwaneri, Northern Ireland youth international Daniel McCarron and seven academy prospects.
Arsenal have announced nine new first-year scholars, with the group set to begin their academy journeys in the 2026/27 season.
The new intake features Hakeem Abubakar, Elyon Mbala, Daniel McCarron, Emerson Nwaneri, Jayden Oba, Theo Odaji-Ukueko, Angelinou Pedro, Charlie Purdy and Joshua Sesay, all of whom will wear Arsenal colours as scholars over the next two years.
The scholars were joined by their families at Emirates Stadium for a signing event, with Head of Academy Coaching Luke Hobbs and Head of Academy Operations Will Oldham also in attendance.
Some of the group have already stepped up beyond under-16 football, with Nwaneri and Pedro in particular catching the eye for their progress last season.
Emerson Nwaneri (younger brother of Ethan) made headlines with a hat-trick against Chelsea’s under-16s, then grabbed the winner in the Premier League U16 National Finals against Aston Villa. He went on to score twice in 12 outings for the under-18s and made his first appearances in both the UEFA Youth League and Premier League 2.
Pedro started the campaign yet to play a competitive academy match, but by the end of the season he had racked up 13 appearances across five different competitions. The right-sided centre-back even scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Aston Villa in the U18 Premier League and earned opportunities at under-21 and European youth level.
McCarron is the sole new face among the scholars, arriving from Dungannon Swifts this summer where he had already been involved with the first team and earned eight caps for Northern Ireland at under-17 level.
He was no stranger to Arsenal’s academy staff, having featured for the club during their victorious Flamengo Adidas Cup run in December 2024.
Mbala arrives with a solid grounding at under-18 level. The attacking left-back made nine starts after debuting against Southampton in January, all while still just 15 years old.
Abubakar brings versatility across the back line, able to slot in at centre-back or left-back. Odaji-Ukueko, meanwhile, has grown into a holding midfield role after spells on the right of defence.
Purdy adds a creative spark and set-piece threat from midfield, while Oba and Sesay offer further attacking options. Both played their part as Arsenal lifted the Premier League U16 National Finals trophy last November.
These scholarships signal the start of a tougher chapter in each player’s development. Most will aim to make their mark under Adam Birchall with the under-18s, while those who have already tasted older age-group football will be eager to keep pushing for chances in Premier League 2 and the UEFA Youth League.
