Club icon delighted with the Scottish core built at Ibrox under new boss Derek McInnes
Rangers hero Ally McCoist believes the foundations of the transfers made by the club this summer are reminiscent of signings legendary manager Walter Smith used to make early in the window.
The Light Blues have established what McCoist refers to as a ‘good base’ early in the window of players who know what it means to represent the club. New manager Derek McInnes also falls into this category having spent five years at Ibrox as a player. So far the Light Blues have signed Lawrence Shankland, Ross McCrorie, Ben Godfrey, Ivor Pandur, Dan Neil, Cammy Devlin and Vanja Dragojevic as the summer rebuild begins to take shape.
McInnes has given no indication that Rangers are done yet in the window and is expecting another body to come in before their season gets underway at Dundee United on Friday. McCoist claims Rangers had a similar transfer policy under his old mentor Smith, who won 21 major honours over two Ibrox spells.

Rangers acquiring ‘good base’ to work with
Now that Rangers have their identity established, McCoist thinks they can now go and broaden their horizons in the summer window. He told Open Goal: “Rangers are doing the exact same thing that Walter Smith kept going on about. You've got a good base and then you bring players in that can sense it. Whether it's Dado Purso, Lorenzo Amoruso, Marco Negri, Sergio Porrini etc, boys like that. If you've got that base whereabouts, it's easier for them to come in and go, alright, ‘so here we go.’ They now know what it takes.”
The modern version of the Scottish core would be Shankland and McCrorie, who both had strong ties to the club previously. Iconic former goalkeeper Allan McGregor was also added to the coaching staff as a player who knows what it likes to be successful at Ibrox. To add to this, in Shankland, Neil and Dragojevic, they have former club captains.

McCoist on overdue ‘clinical finisher’ and ‘solid’ additions
As a player who’s been linked with Rangers throughout his career, Shankland finally made the move from Hearts in June. McCoist believes this is a case of better late than never. He continued: “It was a no brainer. Although if they done it 18 months earlier, I think Rangers would have won the league. But no, he’s a great signing, maybe the most natural finisher we’ve had since Kris Boyd.”
The Rangers icon also named McCrorie and Devlin as ‘solid’ signings who will bring the club forward. He added: “They’re Solid. Devlin had a great season as well. I know Hearts missed him when he got injured last season. McCrorie, he’s solid too. I know him well. I signed him when he was a boy. He’s a good lad and he knows the club.”
