A Miami Heat employee accidentally published a LeBron James press conference livestream while preparing content before going on vacation, but James ultimately signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.
The reason behind the Miami Heat's accidental scheduling of a LeBron James introductory press conference has been revealed.
LeBron James
Position SF
Age 41
Height 206 cm
Weight 113 kg
Birth place Akron, United States of America
According to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, the Heat staff member responsible was preparing to go on vacation and tried to get ahead of any work that could arise if James chose to return to Miami.
"Sources told ESPN [the staffer] had scheduled vacation for this week and was trying to get ahead of work that could come up if James indeed chose the Heat," Shelburne reported.
The explanation reportedly amused James' longtime agent, Rich Paul, as well as the small group of people the four-time NBA champion trusted during his decision-making process.
Heat employee prepared for possible LeBron return
The confusion began when a livestream titled "LeBron James Introductory Press Conference" briefly appeared on the Heat's official YouTube channel.
The press conference was scheduled for July 27, leading fans to believe Miami had accidentally revealed James' destination before he announced his decision.
The link was quickly removed after screenshots began circulating on social media.
However, the scheduled event was not based on inside knowledge that LeBron had chosen Miami.
Instead, the employee was creating material in advance so the organization would be prepared if James signed with the Heat.
A team spokesperson subsequently confirmed that the livestream had mistakenly been made public while Miami's social media department planned for that possibility.
James chose Philadelphia over Miami, other teams
The premature upload ultimately proved meaningless, as James announced that he would sign with the Philadelphia 76ers for his record-extending 24th NBA season.
The 41-year-old selected Philadelphia over other interested teams, including Miami, Cleveland and Golden State, as he continues pursuing a fifth NBA championship.
LeBron described the move as his "last decision" and said his priority was competing for another title rather than maximizing his salary.
Miami therefore went from appearing to have accidentally leaked James' return to watching him begin the final chapter of his career with an Eastern Conference rival.
