The San Antonio Spurs' offseason is all but over, but their free agency moves should make them the talk of the NBA. After finishing with 62 wins and making the NBA Finals last season, they entered the summer with the goal of improving an already great team.
That seemed like an impossible goal, but they've exceeded all expectations this summer. Even with the Philadelphia 76ers' recent additions of Jaylen Brown and LeBron James, the Spurs have arguably had a better offseason.
They surprised many by looking to the NBA Draft to add depth at center by selecting Jayden Quaintance and trading for Tarris Reed Jr. Factor in the addition of Tobias Harris, who ranks among the best free agent signings, and the Spurs had a stronger-than-expected offseason.

The Spurs' real offseason moves involves internal improvement
While other teams got flashy free agent additions, the Spurs potentially already have all they need on their roster. For instance, Victor Wembanyama improving even 10% over last season this summer could be huge for the Silver and Black.
He clearly has untapped potential on both sides of the ball, especially offensively, after averaging 25 points per game. That's despite him still not having a go-to move, struggling in the post, and being a poor screen setter.
Fixing even two of those things this summer could easily increase his scoring to more than 27 points per game. Meanwhile, Stephon Castle steadily improved as a shooter last season while showcasing his playmaking abilities.
If his shooting further improves, he could very well become an all-star next season. As for Dylan Harper and De'Aaron Fox, Harper could see a big uptick in minutes and could see his production dramatically increase as well.
Fox has all of the motivation in the world to prove critics wrong after an embarrassing NBA Finals performance.
The Tobias Harris signing headlines the Spurs' offseason moves
Reed Jr. will slot in as the team's third-string center while Quaintance rehabs from knee surgery. However, both players project to be far better than Bismack Biyombo, Mason Plumlee, and Kelly Olynyk, none of whom will return next season.
Meanwhile, Harris gives San Antonio a versatile shooter who can hit threes, knock down mid-range jumpers, and score some in the post. At a position of need, no less.

Revamping their center rotation and adding more depth at power forward should make a team that won 62 games even better.
As should internal improvement from their young core. Even if they hadn't made any offseason moves, San Antonio is likely banking on Wembanyama, Castle, Harper, and Fox all being even better next season. If they all are, then the Sixers' offseason moves could pail in comparison to the Spurs'.
