Federico Chiesa is staying put, for now. Amid all the transfer noise this summer, the Italian says his head is only on Liverpool. That is the big Liverpool news out of Anfield this week.
Federico Chiesa opens up on his Liverpool future
Chiesa has struggled for game time since his move from Juventus in 2024. He joined for a fee of £12.5m and signed a contract that runs until 2028. Across two full seasons at Anfield, the winger has made just one Premier League start. He has scored three goals in 36 appearances across all competitions.
As reported by BBC, speaking to reporters after a pre-season friendly, Chiesa was clear about his feelings on staying put. “Right now, at the moment, I am happy here at Liverpool,” he said. “I love the club, I love the fans, I love everything.” Back in June, Chiesa had told an Italian outlet that he might need to leave if things did not improve. That comment fueled fresh doubts about his long-term future in England. Asked if a new coach meant a genuine fresh start, he admitted the answer was not simple. “It is always a fresh start at the beginning of the year,” he said. “Maybe there have been too many fresh starts, but I don’t care.”

A tough two years since his big money move
Chiesa’s struggles under former boss Arne Slot were plain to see in the numbers. One league start in two years is a stark stat for any forward once seen as a marquee signing. Tactically, Slot often preferred wide forwards who could track back and press in a settled shape. Chiesa’s game leans more on quick bursts and direct running, which did not always suit that system.
As reported by The Guardian, he explained: “The gaffer decided to do so, he had his gameplans, he took his decisions.” “I have nothing to say about that. It is football.” That mismatch of style, more than any dip in form, looks like the real reason his chances stayed so limited.
New manager Iraola brings fresh hope for Chiesa
Arne Slot was replaced by Andoni Iraola at Anfield in June, opening a new chapter for the squad. Chiesa scored as Liverpool beat Sunderland 4-2 in the first friendly of the new era. That goal will not fix two quiet seasons on its own, but it is a promising start. Iraola is known for a high pressing, front-footed approach that could suit a direct runner like Chiesa. If that tactical shift holds through the season, his skill set may finally get proper use.
A front-footed setup often needs wide players who can beat defenders one-on-one and stretch the pitch. That description fits Chiesa’s game far better than the patient build-up seen under Slot. As reported by Empire of the Kop, Bologna have also shown loan interest in Federico Chiesa this summer, should Liverpool be open to a deal. Fans on Merseyside will hope Iraola gives him a genuine run of starts to test that idea. “But I don’t care, I am trying to do my best for this new manager,”he said. For now, his focus stays simple and clear, centred only on proving his worth at the Reds.
