The possibility of Stephen Curry and LeBron James finally sharing the NBA court as teammates generated plenty of buzz as the Golden State Warriors emerged among the teams reportedly vying for the services of the 41-year-old superstar during his free agency.
But in the end, James decided on Philadelphia, signing a two-year deal to join the 76ers after parting ways with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Curry, whom James faced in four consecutive NBA finals and teamed up with to win the 2024 Paris Olympics gold medal, accepted that the dream partnership may never come to fruition after the four-time NBA MVP chose a different path.
“That’s why you don’t envision anything until it happens,” Curry told The Athletic's Marcus Thompson II.
"There’s a lot of moving parts.”
Curry and James spent most of their careers battling each other.
From 2015 to 2018, James and the Cleveland Cavaliers faced Curry and the Warriors in the NBA Finals with Golden State winning three of the four clashes in 2015, 2017, and 2018.
James got the other one when he led Cleveland to the 2016 title alongside Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving, and JR Smith.
James' potential arrival at Golden State could have been a massive help to Curry and the injury-plagued Warriors with the likes of Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody out with separate injuries.
"The through line, which is hard on anybody in this situation, especially with us keeping this thing together, is knowing that when Jimmy got hurt and Moses got hurt, the whole calculus of everything changes," Curry said in the report.
"How do you get through their absence and still stay at a certain level? And then how that goes into this year. It’s the same deal. So, I’m a realist on that.”
