Chelsea ‘working to sign’ Jordan Henderson for free from Brentford — reports

England national team spirit animal and expert celebrator, Jordan Henderson is currently under contract at Brentford for another year, but the West London club are ready to “grant” him a free transfer, and that has caught the attentions of the new guardians in charge of Chelsea’s kindergarten. According to [The Athletic](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7473032/2026/07/27/jordan-henderson-chelsea-transfer/), we are “working to sign” the 36-year-old midfielder.

Former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel took Henderson along to the World Cup to provide some veteran leadership and to keep order in the dressing-room, and by all accounts, Hendo did just that. He may have played just a handful of minutes, making a late cameo in the final group stage game, but that wasn’t really his purpose (and so it didn’t really matter that he broke his arm during the celebrations of England’s win in Mexico City in the Round of 16).

And I suppose he could fulfill a very similar role with the Blues, with new manager Xabi Alonso evidently quite keen on adding a veteran presence or two to the squad. We tried (and failed) with Granit Xhaka, but are also said to be looking at John Stones and Danny Welbeck, and now Henderson as well. Do we need all three? Probably not. Are any better than none? Most definitely. Henderson and Stones are both free agents effectively, which would help as well.

Henderson’s closing in our 700 career senior professional appearances at club level, and he was a key player for Brentford last season. But as long as we’re not relying on him as a starter (or a potential Enzo replacement), this deal (like the potential Xhaka, Stones, or Welbeck deals) would underline our intent to reshape the attitude and mentality of the squad.
