Liverpool star missing from training ahead of Wrexham clash

Liverpool continue their pre-season tour of the United States this week as they face Wrexham.

Liverpool continue their pre-season tour of the United States this week as they face Wrexham, looking to build on a winning start under new head coach Andoni Iraola.

The Reds opened their tour with a 4-2 victory over Premier League rivals Sunderland in Nashville on Saturday despite missing several key players.

Wrexham also made an impressive start to their U.S. schedule, edging Leeds United 3-2 after previously defeating Manchester United in Helsinki.

The Championship club will now aim to claim a third victory over top-flight opposition this summer as they continue preparations for another promotion push.

Liverpool’s biggest concern from the Sunderland win was Joe Gomez, who lasted just 10 minutes before being forced off with an injury. Iraola described it as “the worst news” of the day, highlighting the club’s lack of defensive depth.

“Probably the worst news has been straight away the injury of Joe [Gomez]. We were happy because we were kind of going through all the training without losing any player. Unluckily for us, straight away we’ve lost Joe,” the 44-year-old said.

The defender missed Sunday’s training session in Chicago and is expected to undergo tests after suffering a suspected muscle injury.

Gomez was Liverpool’s only available senior centre-back for the Sunderland clash, further underlining the need for defensive reinforcements.

There was better news elsewhere, with Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Ryan Gravenberch joining their teammates for their first training session of the summer after linking up with the squad following the victory in Nashville.

All three could feature against Wrexham in New York on Wednesday, providing Iraola with a significant boost in midfield and attack.

Meanwhile, Giovanni Leoni and Wataru Endo are yet to resume full team training despite travelling with the squad to the United States, although Endo is understood to be close to returning.

Another positive was Stefan Bajcetic’s continued progress. The midfielder again trained with the group as he steadily builds fitness ahead of a potential return later in pre-season.
