Manchester United officially sign goalkeeper linked with Liverpool

Manchester United have completed the signing of a goalkeeper linked with Liverpool.

Liverpool remain focused on signing Bradley Barcola before the transfer window closes, but Andoni Iraola is also keen to strengthen both his attack and defence ahead of the new season.

The Spaniard enjoyed a winning start to his reign as Liverpool head coach with a 4-2 pre-season victory over Sunderland. However, the match also brought a fresh injury concern after Joe Gomez was forced off early.

Goals from Kieran Morrison, Dominik Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa and Lewis Koumas provided plenty of encouragement, while new signing Jeremy Jacquet was absent only as a precaution and is expected to resume full training.

Gomez’s injury, though, has renewed questions over Liverpool’s defensive depth at a time when the club are under pressure to strengthen the squad. Replacing Mohamed Salah remains a priority, with Barcola continuing to be a leading target.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have missed out on Swansea City goalkeeper Kit Margetson, despite previously being credited with interest.

Manchester United have officially announced the signing of the 20-year-old, subject to registration, after agreeing a compensation package with Swansea.

Margetson did not make a senior appearance for the Swans but impressed during a loan spell at Welsh Premier League side Connah’s Quay Nomads, where he kept 10 clean sheets in 34 appearances.

He played a key role in helping the club qualify for European competition. The Wales youth international, son of former goalkeeper Martyn Margetson, also made his Under-21 debut against Belarus in March.

Kit Margetson has been with Swansea City since joining the club at under-15 level, with the Swans entitled to compensation for his development.

Margetson was named in Swansea’s first-team matchday squad for a Championship fixture against Millwall towards the end of the 2024-25 season and was a regular member of the club’s senior training group.

A club statement read: “Manchester United have agreed the signing of exciting young goalkeeper Kit Margetson, subject to registration. Everyone at United would like to welcome Kit to the club and wish him the very best of luck for the future.”

Margetson becomes Manchester United’s fourth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow.
