Arsenal’s hopes of signing John Stones appear to be fading after the England international reportedly reached a verbal agreement to join Inter Milan.
According to Sky Sports, the 32-year-old has agreed in principle to move to the Serie A giants on a free transfer following the expiry of his Manchester City contract.
The report states that Stones’ representatives are now working with Inter to finalise the terms of a two-year contract before the move is made official.
Arsenal had been credited with interest in the experienced defender during the summer transfer window as Mikel Arteta assessed opportunities to strengthen his back line.
Chelsea and Juventus were also linked with the former Manchester City centre-back, with the latter making contact with his representatives over the weekend.
Inter, however, were aware of the growing competition and accelerated negotiations in an effort to secure Stones’ signature.
That approach now appears to have paid off after the player gave the green light to the move.
The deal would tie Stones to a club aiming to strengthen its defence ahead of the new campaign under Christian Chivu.
Inter are also interested in Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero, although his valuation is understood to be significantly higher and could complicate any move.
As things stand, Stones has emerged as the club’s priority defensive addition.
Inter could still pursue Romero later in the window if Benjamin Pavard departs, but securing Stones is currently their immediate objective.
For Arsenal, the latest development removes one of the more experienced options available on the market.
Arteta has continued to balance the pursuit of proven performers with younger long-term investments as the Gunners look to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts.
Stones’ versatility, composure in possession and familiarity with Arteta from their time together at Manchester City had made him an attractive option despite his age.
The England international enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at the Etihad Stadium, winning multiple Premier League titles and the Champions League while establishing himself as one of the division’s most accomplished ball-playing defenders.
His experience at the highest level would have added valuable depth and leadership to Arsenal’s squad.
Instead, he now looks set for a new challenge in Italy.
Unless negotiations unexpectedly break down, Inter appear on course to complete the signing, leaving Arsenal to focus on alternative defensive targets before the transfer window closes.
