Leeds United medical imminent for James Trafford – Additional clause lined up by Man City

Leeds United have scheduled a medical this week for James Trafford to join the club from Manchester City.

The Whites are closing in on signing James Trafford for Manchester City in what could be the statement of the window at Elland Road.

Nailing down a long-term goalkeeper has been a constant issue for managers preceding Daniel Farke. Now, it looks like the 49ers have solved that position.

James Trafford set for Leeds United medical this week after Man City agreement

Having progressed in talks at the end of last week, Leeds have now reached an agreement with Manchester City to sign the 23-year-old.

Various reports claim that United are set to confirm a £40million deal with add-ons on top of that. It would see Trafford become Leeds’ club-record transfer as a result.

On top of this, Florian Plettenberg reports that United have already pencilled in a medical for Trafford to complete this week.

It comes as Trafford pursues an exit in order to guarantee playing time away from Man City. Of course, Trafford was blind-sided at the Etihad when his arrival was quickly undermined by Gigi Donnarumma joining later in the same window.

The question now is what have Man City interlaced into Trafford’s contract to make the deal juicier from their end?

Now, The Daily Mail’s Simon Jones reports that a deal is worth £40million with a further £5million in add-ons. Importantly, he notes that City have included a sell-on clause in the contract for any future sale of Trafford by Leeds.

It remains to be seen for certain whether the Etihad club have included any buyback or release clauses for Trafford. TalkSPORT previously reported that there could be a release clause included, potentially allowing Trafford another move to an elite club, provided that Leeds’ pockets are sufficiently lined first.

Graham Smyth notes that he’d be surprised to see Leeds get away with no release clause included. However, any such inclusion would only serve to benefit the Whites via a mammoth sale.

Forget the clauses, this is a monumental statement from Leeds and the 49ers.

Trafford was always going to be one of the most sought-after goalkeepers on the market this summer. So, the fact he’s joining Leeds is another testament to the recruitment staff here.

After signing Harry Wilson and Tarik Muharemovic amidst strong rival interest, getting Trafford in the doors is huge.

Trafford is almost certainly going to be England’s next long-term No1. The fact he could be doing that at Elland Road is amazing to think.
