Arsenal fans may well be underwhelmed by the signing of Cardiff youngster Axel Donczew (16) but it is part of Arsenal’s ‘plan for the present and the future’ policy.
Donczew made his debut in the EFL trophy defeat against Newport County on the 7th of October 2025 at just 15 years and 234 days old.
There was competition for the signature of the right footed left winger who is regarded as one of the brightest emerging talents.
The snag further down the line may involve a tribunal to assess the players true value because at present Arsenal only have to pay a compensation fee.
That fee is calculated for the years the player spent at the academy and can be between £12,000 and £40,00O but Liverpool were asked to pay an initial figure of al £1.5M which climber to £4.3M for Elliot Harvey by the PFCC ( professional football compensation committee)
Aside from that, what could we expect from Donczew.
He’s a strong, determined and progressive player with an eye for goal.
He cuts in from the flank, can float through the middle, provide a defence splitting pass and possesses a decent strike.
He has great balance and control, jinks this way and that and rides a tackle even when he’s massively outnumbered, in-fact he’s not dissimilar to Max Dowman in that respect.
However he is one for the future and it’s uncertain if he’ll get a run out next season.
Much will depend on his ability to settle and adjust to his new environment.
To date he’s appeared in two matches for Cardiff and three for Wales with nothing major to report but if you head to YouTube you’ll find a host of clips that showcase his talent and potential.
His move opens up the old argument about academy players being poached from their parent club after they have invested all the time, money and effort in their development.
As an Arsenal fan you’d have to think of the hypothetical situation involving players like Max Dowman or MLS departing after being nurtured for years in The Hale End academy to appreciate what Cardiff fans are feeling at this moment.

“It’s yet another example that we should not spend one extra penny on the academy, as all our best youngsters get poached.
Every available penny needs to be invested into improving the first team. We need to get to the Premier League first, then we will be able to keep our better youngsters. There is no other way unfortunately.”
Of course time will tell if the move was in the player and clubs interest with Arsenal now picking up the role of development mentor.
Incidentally, the last player to move from Cardiff to North London was Aaron James Ramsey in 2008 and that worked out ok.
