Aston Villa and Everton target Neil El Aynaoui
Aston Villa have made Neil El Aynaoui a priority target this summer. And they are far from alone in pursuing the AS Roma midfielder. But Everton is the club holding what could prove to be a decisive advantage.
The Morocco international has emerged as one of the biggest performers from the 2026 World Cup after impressing in the heart of his country’s midfield. His performances have ensured there is no shortage of Premier League interest.
Spanish outlet Todo Mercado Web reports Aston Villa have identified El Aynaoui as a priority signing, with Unai Emery personally pushing for the 25-year-old.
Villa believe he could strengthen their midfield ahead of another demanding campaign. For this reason, they are expected to keep working on a deal over the coming weeks.
The report paints a picture of fierce competition, though. Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Brighton, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Sunderland are all credited with monitoring the midfielder’s situation. So around half the Premier League have him on their radar.
Everton’s unique position
Despite Aston Villa’s determination, the report argues Everton have a strategic advantage over every other English club. This is because The Friedkin Group owns both the Toffees and Roma.
Whether that ultimately translates into preferential treatment remains to be seen. However, it is a factor none of Villa’s rivals can match if Roma decide to cash in.
El Aynaoui joined Roma from Lens in the summer of 2025. While his first Serie A season was inconsistent, his stock has risen sharply following the World Cup. In fact, he established himself as one of Morocco’s standout performers.
Transfermarkt currently values him at €23m (£20m). Nevertheless, Roma would almost certainly look for a higher fee if multiple Premier League clubs formalise their interest.
For now, Aston Villa appear to be leading the chase in football terms thanks to Emery’s backing, while Everton may be the club best placed politically if negotiations with Roma gather pace.
