Arsenal transfer news## Barcelona star Marc Bernal has been linked with a move to Arsenal during this summer's transfer window
08:40, 28 Jul 2026
Arsenal have been handed a transfer blow with Barcelona star Marc Bernal deciding to remain at the club. The Gunners are one of several clubs to be credited with an interest in signing the 19-year-old midfielder this summer.
Midfield is an area of the squad where Arsenal have been linked with adding some new faces to their ranks this summer, but are yet to complete any new signings that strengthen the middle of the park so far.
Bernal’s name has been mentioned on the rumour mill for Arsenal over the last few months, but that now appears to be a non-starter after the latest update on the teenager’s future.
Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo have reported that Bernal has decided not to leave Barcelona this summer, despite reported interest from Arsenal.
The report claims that the Gunners have been joined by Chelsea and Manchester United in expressing an interest in signing Bernal this summer, while Serie A outfit Roma and Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr have also been mentioned as potential destinations in the past.
However, the report states that Barcelona never had any intentions of allowing Bernal to leave the club this summer, with the 19-year-old having “absolute loyalty” to the La Liga giants.
As a result, this sends a clear message to Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, that a deal will not happen.
Bernal is reported to have a €500million (£427.5million) release clause in his contract at Barcelona, which means an exit from the Camp Nou is almost impossible unless the club were to agree to sanction his exit for a much lower fee.
Barcelona handed Bernal much more responsibility last season, making 22 appearances in La Liga to help the club beat bitter rivals Real Madrid to win the Spanish league title.

He also made six appearances in the Champions League last term, scoring one goal, which came against Newcastle United in the last-16.

Arsenal have completed two signings so far this summer as they prepare for their Premier League title defence, and are expected to go into the market for more reinforcements.
Illan Meslier was signed as a free agent following the expiration of his contract at Leeds United, while Christos Tzolis has been signed on a permanent deal after a £34.5million fee was agreed with Club Brugge.
