The Athletic confirm Arsenal add former Real Madrid defender to centre-back shortlist

Arsenal have closely followed the Spaniard’s development, with the club exploring a number of options following William Saliba’s long-term back injury.

Arsenal have added Como centre-back Jacobo Ramón to their shortlist of defensive targets as the club continue searching for reinforcements ahead of the new season.

According to The Athletic, the Gunners have closely followed the 21-year-old Spaniard’s development in Serie A, with sporting director Andrea Berta exploring a number of options following William Saliba’s long-term back injury.

The report states that Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa and former Manchester City defender John Stones were both discussed internally, although Stones is now on the verge of joining Inter Milan. As a result, Ramón remains one of the younger defensive options under consideration.

Ramón enjoyed an impressive breakthrough campaign with Como after joining from Real Madrid in 2025. The 21-year-old quickly established himself as one of Serie A’s most promising young central defenders, combining strong aerial ability with composure in possession and the confidence to play out from the back.

His performances have not gone unnoticed.

Arsenal are said to be among several clubs monitoring the Spanish youth international, with Chelsea also credited with an interest in recent weeks. However, any deal is far from straightforward because of the clauses Real Madrid negotiated when allowing him to leave.

The Spanish giants reportedly retained 50 per cent of Ramón’s economic rights, meaning they would receive half of any future transfer fee. In addition, Real Madrid inserted multiple buy-back clauses into the agreement, giving them significant control over the defender’s future should they decide to bring him back to the Santiago Bernabéu.

Those conditions complicate any potential move for Arsenal, as negotiations would effectively involve both Como and Real Madrid.

Despite the contractual hurdles, Arsenal’s continued interest highlights the club’s desire to recruit a defender capable of developing into a long-term first-team option rather than simply providing short-term cover.

Andrea Berta has been assessing several profiles across Europe as the Gunners look to strengthen their defensive depth, and Ramón’s age, technical quality and experience in one of Europe’s top leagues make him an attractive candidate.

No formal offer has been reported at this stage, and Como remain keen to retain one of their standout young players. Nevertheless, with Arsenal continuing to monitor the Spaniard closely, Ramón has emerged as another name to watch as the transfer window enters its decisive weeks.
