Josko Gvardiol is convinced Manchester City have all the tools to compete for major honours after the defender signed a new long-term contract at the Etihad.

The 24-year-old was the subject of transfer interest earlier in the summer but has put pen to paper on a deal until 2031, becoming the third City star in a week to sign fresh terms following Phil Foden and Abdukodir Khusanov.

The Croatia international was named City's Player of the Year in the 2024/25 campaign and his ability, mentality and versatility are three of the key reasons as to why the Blues wanted to tie him down to an extended contract.

Gvardiol missed the second half of last season after breaking his leg in January's draw with Chelsea but returned in the closing weeks of the campaign and featured for Croatia at the World Cup.

The defender is now set to fly out to Asia as Enzo Maresca's side head out on tour and Gvardiol believes the foundations are in place for City to have a successful era under the Italian as they look to reclaim the Premier League title.

“The players we have here are amazing. This is a world-class squad that is young and full of potential. I truly believe we will have a lot of success in the coming years," Gvardiol said.

On Maresca, he added: “Most of the guys have had the opportunity before to work with him. I haven’t met him before. He’s one of the best as well and we all know the job he did at Chelsea.

"I remember when he was at Chelsea, it was difficult to play against them, especially away. We struggled. We’re really happy that he is here with us, and we can learn something new from his ideas and his mentality. He’s here and I think we can achieve some great things together.”

Director of football Hugo Viana added: “Josko is a player this club really believes in. He is young, an outstanding professional and already one of the best defenders in the world.

"Manchester City are committed to keeping our best talent, which is why we are so happy this new contract has been agreed.

“Josko epitomises what we want in our defenders - he can play multiple positions, is quick, strong and when he attacks he does it superbly. He is exceptional.

“But the way he conducts himself is also very impressive. This is a young man determined to be the best he can be - an approach that is totally aligned with our overall vision.

“I want to congratulate Josko on this new deal and everyone at City is now focused on ensuring he maximises his potential.”
