Chelsea's summer of big spending looks to increase further by the time September's transfer deadline rolls around, with Jordan Henderson looking increasingly likely to land at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are interested in signing Jordan Henderson this summer, as Xabi Alonso looks to make a number of changes to his first-team.
It's already been a summer of big spending for BlueCo, welcoming Denner, Emmanuel Emegha, Geovany Quenda, Marco Palestra and Morgan Rogers. Dastan Stapayev, meanwhile, will also officially become a Blue on his 18th birthday next month as a result of a pre-arranged deal with Kairat Almaty.
However, it appears as though Alonso will welcome more fresh faces to his crop before the summer transfer window slams shut in September.
Henderson has now emerged as a potential candidate, as Alonso looks to bring a wealth of experience to the centre of the park. But will the 36-year-old be a good fit in west London?

While his best days are arguably behind him, Jordan Henderson proved last season with Brentford that he still has life in his legs. The Sunderland-born veteran was instrumental to the Bees' success in the Premier League in 2025/26, as they bagged an admirable ninth-place finish.
While it would be harsh to compare his attacking prowess to younger talents such as Morgan Rogers of Cole Palmer, the 36-year-old has shown time and time again that he can still ping a pass and thread a ball like no other. Composed with the ball at his feet, his reading of the game through years of playing at the highest level is also exceptional - an area in which Chelsea have struggled as of late.
Defensively, meanwhile, Henderson is not afraid to get stuck in, will give nothing less than 110 per cent every time he touches the turf, and makes hard work look easy in terms of tracking and winning the ball back. He also brings far more than technical capability to Stamford Bridge - his leadership on and off the pitch a cut above the rest and a winner’s mentality deep-seated within him.
Obviously he’s not a player who is going to start week in, week out under Xabi Alonso, but he’s a hell of an asset to have on the bench to come on and close out nitty gritty clashes, and will undoubtedly bathe his peers with streams of extensive knowledge around the training ground.

This is a wise transfer, providing Jordan Henderson is not commanding a Morgan Rogers style transfer fee. Chelsea need a dressing room leader and few are as respected and experienced as Henderson.
Xabi Alonso would have done his research and come across a dressing room which, throughout the BlueCo reign, has eaten Graham Potter and Liam Rosenior alive, while also had ill-discipline under Enzo Maresca and Mauricio Pochettino.
The immaturity and hot-headedness has to be rooted out and Henderson will be vital for that. He can also lend his wisdom to captain Reece James, who has often looked burdened by the weight of the arm band.
Providing the transfer fee is not outrageous, there is nothing to lose with this move and everything to gain!

Once you get past the initial shock, signing Jordan Henderson on a free transfer should not be scoffed at. While the England international would not bring as much to Chelsea's midfield as the comparable player they pursued earlier this summer, Granit Xhaka, the costs involved help make it more appealing.
Six years since signing Thiago Silva at the end of his Paris Saint-Germain contract, and two years on from his return to Fluminense, they have yet to replace his presence around the club. Thomas Tuchel saw the need to have Henderson around the England camp this summer, even with a broken arm.
There is even more of an argument for having such a figure in club squads, given the less stringent squad-size limits. Chelsea's lack of experience is well documented, with the last player they signed on a free transfer, Tosin, being their oldest player despite not turning 29 until September.

It’s pretty obvious from the links with Granit Xhaka that Chelsea are keen to sign an experienced head in the centre of the pitch. Jordan Henderson certainly fits that remit.
The fact that the Brentford midfielder was included in the England squad for the World Cup due to his impact on the squad off the pitch speaks a lot about the type of player and leader that he is.
It does feel like Chelsea’s dressing room needs more experienced heads to help lead the squad. Ill-disipline off the pitch have cost the team in a few games over the last couple of seasons.
Presuming that Brentford won’t want a massive fee for the 36-year-old, with reports even suggesting that the move could be a free transfer, then I think it will be a sensible addition for Chelsea. While he may not be a regular in terms of a name in the starting XI, his impact on the squad could just make a difference in Chelsea’s next step.
Henderson’s personality around the squad was evident this summer when he still remained a big part of the England dressing room despite suffering a freak wrist injury during the World Cup, it feels like that’s the sort of personality that Chelsea needs.

I think Jordan Henderson could be a great addition to the Chelsea squad. If the disciplinary record didn't already stick out like a sore thumb, Xabi Alonso has clearly spotted something, whether it be a dynamic in the dressing room or an attitude on the training pitch, that needs fixing.
Alongside Danny Welbeck, the 35-year-old midfielder will be tasked with reinforcing high standards in training and weathering storms behind the scenes during difficult periods of the season. The arrival of Henderson would be equivalent to signing a third-choice goalkeeper. Or even a teacher drafting in an assistant.

He probably won't play much. He won't block the pathway of any young players into the first-team. He will, however, bring great leadership to the dressing room and offer good quality when called upon.
Most importantly, the signing of Henderson, as well as potentially Welbeck, proves that higher-ups at Stamford Bridge are actually prepared to give Alonso the authority to make recruitment decisions. It would also be evidence that BlueCo are ready to move from their youth-centric transfer model.
Signing an exciting prospect is completely fine. It shows ambition. But Chelsea need to bring in the likes of Henderson to balance the dressing room. A Premier League and Champions League winner on a free transfer sounds like great business to me.
