A tweet from one Liverpool supporter this week caught plenty of attention:
“Virgil is still in Slot mode. He should have been in the US on the preseason tour meshing with Iraola’s scene & being the skipper for Liverpool Football Club. We need to have standards especially from the Captain.”
Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
But personally, I find this line of criticism extremely unfair.
Even Captains Need a Break
Modern footballers are expected to perform almost non-stop.
A typical season now includes:
Premier League football
European competition
Domestic cup matches
International fixtures
Major tournaments
Extensive travel
Commercial commitments
Players rarely get meaningful time away from the game.
If anyone has earned a short break, it is someone like Virgil van Dijk.
Leading Doesn’t Stop on Holiday
Some supporters seem to believe leadership only exists when a player is physically present.
That simply isn’t true.
Van Dijk has spent years setting standards at Liverpool through his performances, professionalism and influence in the dressing room.
A few extra days of rest do not suddenly erase that.
Leadership is built over years, not measured by attendance at a pre-season tour.
Iraola Will Understand
Andoni Iraola is an experienced coach.
He knows the importance of having his captain fresh and ready for the season ahead.
Would he like every player available from day one? Of course.
But he will also recognise that players returning from demanding campaigns sometimes need carefully managed schedules.
Having Van Dijk fully fit in August is far more important than having him available for every minute of pre-season.
Standards Work Both Ways
The tweet mentions standards.
That’s a fair point.
But standards should also apply to supporters.
Criticising a player for taking an earned holiday—particularly someone who has given so much to Liverpool—doesn’t feel like holding standards.
It feels unnecessarily harsh.
A Liverpool Legend
Virgil van Dijk has been one of Liverpool’s most important players of the modern era.
He has captained the club with distinction, won every major honour available and consistently put his body on the line for the team.
He has earned enormous respect.
That doesn’t mean supporters can never criticise him.
But surely that criticism should be reserved for performances on the pitch rather than taking a well-earned break before another long season.
Let’s Keep Some Perspective
Football supporters are passionate.
That’s one of the things that makes Liverpool special.
But sometimes it’s worth taking a step back.
Virgil van Dijk will return.
He will lead Liverpool again.
He will work with Andoni Iraola and his teammates as preparations continue.
Until then, perhaps we should allow one of the greatest captains in Liverpool’s recent history to enjoy the holiday he has more than earned.
After all, everyone else is entitled to one.
