Danny Welbeck wanted by Chelsea

Danny Welbeck has emerged as a target for Chelsea, with the former Arsenal striker valued as much for his leadership as his goals.

Chelsea are exploring a move for former Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck, with the experienced forward emerging as a target as the club look to add leadership and proven Premier League quality to a youthful, and impetuous squad.

Reports suggest Chelsea have already held positive discussions with Brighton & Hove Albion over a possible summer transfer, although negotiations remain at an early stage and no agreement has been reached.

Welbeck is understood to appeal to Chelsea’s new manager Xabi Alonso, who is keen to introduce greater experience into a dressing room that struggled with discipline again last season after the club’s recent policy of focusing heavily on younger signings.

Brighton are reportedly unwilling to stand in the 35-year-old’s way if a suitable offer arrives. With around a year remaining on his contract, a deal is likely to happen.

Chelsea’s interest follows a productive campaign in which Welbeck scored 13 Premier League goals, with his experience, leadership and consistent top-flight performances all cited as key reasons behind the pursuit.

The move is also being linked to Chelsea’s reported interest in Jordan Henderson, with both players viewed as experienced Premier League figures capable of providing leadership and immediate impact rather than representing long-term development projects. It’s also why they tried to sign Granit Xhaka from Sunderland.

For Arsenal supporters, Welbeck remains a familiar and popular figure after joining the club from Manchester United in a £16 million deal in 2014, and it’s not clear if this move would tarnish that. It had for some others but Olivier Giroud escaped his time at Chelsea relatively unscathed in the eyes of many Gooners.

During his time in north London, Welbeck scored 32 goals and provided 13 assists in 126 appearances after arriving from Manchester United for £16m in 2014. His time at the club, however, was marred by a series of injuries that kept him out of action for a total of 145 games – more than he managed to play.
